and then celine & julie go boating which was, as like all of you told me, amazing. i sat relatively still for its entire runtime, which means something (my ideal length for a movie is 80 minutes). i’ll write about it someday.
i spent almost six hours in the theater today, putting together a solid, thoroughly enjoyable triple bill, which was exactly how i wanted to spend the day. will probably blog about it soon but man, jeff, who lives at home made me cry a lot.

you’d have to be a real stick in the mud to not find something to like about haywire. gina carano is a total badass. i love watching steven soderbergh play around with strong genre pieces as much as he does making them (favorite contemporary american director? confirmed). bonus: it works awesomely if you think of it as soderbergh’s audition to direct the man from u.n.c.l.e. (which, unfortunately, was scrapped).

finally saw shame last night - trying to get in all those last-minute 2011 films that might go on the list. it was disappointing! michael fassbender was as good as everyone said (he’s having a hell of a year, for sure), but i’m just so tired of movies not working for their emotional catharsis. 2011 was the year of directors just figuring that since you’re sitting in the theater, you’ll already appreciate the movie, so why even try. i am so sick of that! plus, it was possibly the most bourgeois movie i’ve ever seen. steve mcqueen, you’re better than this.
darren and i are going to do an overview of things we saw in the theater this year, and probably turn it into a manifesto of what we want movies to do.
