this was really quite good: really emotionally effective, and terrifying in the way that only good horror movies usually are. there was one scene where i was more tense than i can remember being in the theater. i’m not convinced there’s anything michael shannon can’t do - he is seriously one of our best actors. mixed feelings about the ending, though.
side note: it’s an interesting counterpoint to melancholia; whereas von trier’s movie is about the idea of, well, melancholia, take shelter is clearly about the people. and, as always, i prefer (well-made) movies about people to those about ideas (see also: my preference for truffaut over godard).
